Why this matters
When we throw food away, that "away" is the Anchorage Regional Landfill where the food slowly decays. The organic matter, water, and minerals held within are trapped in a sealed tomb of discarded items. Alaska's soils are "relatively young," lacking in organic matter and are generally acidic. We can put that waste to work solidifying our soils and extend the life of our landfill by composting. A simple and natural process that creates an aid for your yard and garden, strengthening Alaska.
We're throwing away valuable materials
The water, nutrients, and minerals in our food came from soil somewhere else, often using artificial fertilizers to support their growth. We extract the resources then allow them to be wasted in a landfill rather than benefitting our land. Each day we're throwing away value while bringing us closer to our landfill's capacity, prompting the need to build a new one.
We need what we're throwing away
"Compost is the single best additive available for improving any soil type." You don't have to be a gardener to benefit. Want your lawn to absorb more water to reduce the puddles? Feel like your backyard is too sandy? Too dense and compact? Compost is the solution to all that ails our soils.
How we will accomplish this
Currently, only part of the Anchorage Bowl has access to curbside compost through Solid Waste Services' "Pink Cart" program. Some have backyard compost piles for their own waste, but over winter they go dormant. I want to expand access to curbside composting, increase the variety of items accepted, and provide a year-round service. With enough interest from the community I will be able to open a compost processing facility to accomplish these goals.
What I'm offering
Professional service
I'm dedicated to providing a high level of service to you, not just your bucket. I'm always interested to hear your thoughts and improve our processes. I view all of our members as teammates in this pursuit.
Feeding Alaska's soils
Alaskan soils are relatively young and less weathered, meaning they're high in mineral content and acidic. Compost will balance the acidity of our soil and provide the organic material its missing.
Regular, reliable pickups
I'm not a large business with a litany interests. I'm here to divert food waste and take care of my members. I won't get distracted because this is my whole thing.
